Minecraft is getting its own movie – and this is what we know so far about it.

Video game adaptations have been getting plenty of acclaim lately, and now, Minecraft is hoping to join that trend. While it's not a new idea to adapt an open world video game into a film, it's certainly a project that is a hot prospect, as Minecraft continues to be a popular franchise, with the game proper, its spin-offs, and other media keeping the name in the news.

The Minecraft movie has been in development for years, and thankfully, we now know a heck of a lot more information than when we first started, like who is going to star in it and when it might release. For all the questions that you’ve been waiting to hear the answer to, here is what we know so far about Minecraft.

What Is The Minecraft Release Date?

At the time of updating this in January 2024, Minecraft is set to release on April 4th 2025, according to The Hollywood Reporter in April 2023. This is great news, and while it won’t be on any 2024 release schedule, it’s still great to see that it’s on the way.

The shift in date has been ongoing for some time – in fact, the movie was set to come out way back in 2019, but obviously that didn’t pan out for a variety of reasons. However, it’s at least great to see that we have a release date for Minecraft now.

Jason Momoa Is The Main Star

For a time, fans didn’t really know who was going to star in the Minecraft movie, but thankfully, more and more news has filtered in regarding it.

Jason Momoa's Most Badass Roles

According to The Hollywood Reporter in April 2022, Jason Momoa will star in the Minecraft film. With his casting, it was also confirmed that the movie would be a live-action film instead of animated.

This was major news. There was such a long stretch of time where we had no idea who was going to star in the film – originally, many believed that Steve Carell would star in it, according to Variety, but that seemed to fall through.

Even so, it looks like Momoa will lead Minecraft – and personally, I think he’ll have a fun time with this adaptation.

Jack Black, Emma Myers And More Will Co-Star

While Momoa is the main star of Minecraft, there have been several other co-stars who have been cast. In May 2023, Deadline reported that Matt Berry, known for his role in The IT Crowd and What We Do in the Shadows, would join the movie.

In November 2023, Danielle Brooks (from The Color Purple and the Orange is the New Black cast) was confirmed by Deadline, as well as Sebastian Eugene Hansen. Brooks will play Dawn, and Hansen will play Henry.

In December 2023, Deadline confirmed that Wednesday cast member, Emma Myers, would also be in Minecraft.

And finally, in January 2024, it was announced that Jack Black would be in Minecraft, according to Deadline and that he’s supposedly playing the role of Steve, one of the main playable characters of Minecraft.  Talk about a star-studded cast. I for one can’t wait to see where they go with this – and I have a feeling this will end up becoming one of the best video-game adaptations out there.

The Plot Is Currently Unknown

So even if Minecraft is set to come out in April 2025, it’s still too soon to know many details about the plot. The main game itself throws a player into an open world aspect where they are able to build things with blocks of different materials. There is a story mode, telling a variety of different stories, but never ones that I felt would be good for live-action form.

The script and directors have changed hands several times, from Shawn Levy to Rob McElhenney all the way to Jared Hess, who is the current director attached to the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter article around Momoa’s casting. That article about Momoa’s casting also said that the script credits are still being determined, so we don’t know for sure who to credit the script to.

Jared Hess Is Directing

Jared Hess is currently the director attached to Minecraft. Hess is mainly known for his directing on comedy movies such as Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre and Gentlemen Broncos, so that means that Minecraft is probably about to be ridiculously funny – and hopefully, he’ll be the director that sticks around for this movie.

Warner Bros Is Aiming For A 2024 Filming Start

According to Deadline in November 2023, Warner Bros (the company behind Minecraft) is aiming for an early 2024 filming start.

How early that is, we’re not sure. We don’t even have a set release date just yet, but at least we know that they are pushing for the movie to start shooting soon. If not, I just might lose my mind having to wait even longer for this film.

After all this time, what are you the most excited about when it comes to the upcoming Minecraft movie? How about that it’s actually releasing? Who would have thought. If I don’t see Jack Black with an ax like Steve in this movie I’m suing.
