How Ron Perlman Feels About Hellboy 3 Not Happening

Hellboy

Following the conclusion of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, many hoped that it wouldn't be long until Hellboy 3 was officially announced. Unfortunately, that project never really managed to escape development hell, resulting in an on-again, off-again saga. The project was just never able to cover much ground, and eventually, producers figured it was time to start from scratch with a reboot. Ron Perlman, who always wanted to cap off his trilogy, no longer has that option, and the actor recently spoke about his feelings on the matter. As far as Perlman is concerned, the past is in the past. As he put it:

It's completely in my rearview mirror. We fought a good fight to get the trilogy finished, that didn't happen. And I'm very, very, very happy with the world of creative choices that I'm working on now. So there are no regrets.

Ron Perlman has officially moved on from Hellboy. Despite previously shutting down any questions about Hellboy during a Reddit AMA, Perlman briefly touched on the subject of Hellboy during an interview with IndieWire. Perlman is putting the situation behind him and not obsessing over what could have been. While Perlman had hoped a conclusion to his Hellboy trilogy would eventually happen, he's focusing his creative energies on new things rather than retreading the past, such as his starring role on the second season of Crackle's StartUp.

Following the middling box office performance of 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army, it was never quite clear if a second sequel was in the cards. Surely, there were possibilities and teases, with both director Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman stating they were hopeful about a third film at different points. However, del Toro's busy schedule around this time (he wouldn't make a movie again until 2013's Pacific Rim) served as a roadblock, as well as a waning studio interest. Ultimately, a reboot devoid of continuity from the previous series was elected to move forward, and while Perlman voiced frustration over the decision, he seems to have found his peace with it.

A true Hellboy 3 will likely never happen, but fans of the comic book do have the reboot to look forward. The new iteration of Hellboy stars David Harbour in the title role, and the movie will see him square off against an evil sorceress known as the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich). The movie initially went under hot water for the casting of Ed Skrein as Ben Daimio, a typically Japanese-American role, but Skrein humbly dropped out. The role has since gone to Daniel Dae Kim, who stars alongside Ian McShane and Penelope Mitchell.

The Hellboy reboot does not currently have a release date, but we'll keep you updated as more updates about the movie come out. For more movie news, make sure to stick with CinemaBlend for all the latest developments.
