One Star Wars: The Last Jedi Scene That May Be Too Reminiscent Of Rogue One

Spoiler alert for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you haven't seen the blockbuster yet, you might want to check out one of our other stories.

It's been less than a week since Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrived in theaters, and it's proving to be one of the most divisive films in the entire franchise. While fans agreed on the inferiority of the prequel trilogy, they seem split as to whether or not Rian Johnson's sequel was a good addition to the property. The community seems to be comparing The Last Jedi to other installments, in particular the dark tone that was also present in Empire Strikes Back. But one scene is also being compared to Rogue One, and by none other than the standalone film's director Gareth Edwards. The Last Jedi's costumer recently opened up about how, when filming a cameo during the battle on Crait, Edwards drew the comparison between the two latest Star Wars releases.

For the shots along the trench in Crait, you see a lot more of the rebel army look: the helmets, smocks, hoods -- a sort of proto-commando look with ammunition pouches on their chests. We're hoping it doesn't look too Rogue One, because we actually had Gareth Edwards as a guest rebel. He looked and went, 'Well this is Rogue One.' We're like, 'No, it's not.' [Laughs] I think that sort of thing works, whichever period of rebel you're doing.

Well, that was awkward. Rogue One and The Last Jedi aren't set in a similar time period, so their costume design should be wholly unique to one another. But Gareth Edwards still saw the similarities. Although to his defense, he no doubt has Rogue One on the brain during his time as an extra on Rian Johnson's film.

This quote comes to us from Last Jedi costume supervisor David Crossman's contribution to the book The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (via Screen Rant). Gareth Edwards apparently found the Battle of Crait quite similar to Rogue One's Battle of Scarif. And aside from the costumes of the rebels, the two do have some similarities. They're both massive ground battles that feature a small group of Rebels attempting to thwart a massive AT-AT assault by the bad guys. The odds are not in the heroes' favor, and it would take some massive sacrifices in order for the Dark Side to ultimately take a loss.

Of course, there are also quite a few reasons why the battles are unique. The weaponry is quite different, as well as the settings themselves. And while Rogue One ended with the Rebels ultimately sacrificing themselves in order to get the plans of the Death Star to Leia, Star Wars: The Last Jedi allowed the small group of Resistance members to escape, thanks to Luke.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters now, and Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently set to arrive May 25th. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.
