What's Happening With The Green Lantern Corps Movie, According To David Goyer

John Stewart and Hal Jordan

The DC Extended Universe is a funny place. Rather than slowly introducing characters and settings from the popular comics, Zack Snyder and company decided to throw in big ensemble casts right away, likely in an attempt to properly compete with the MCU. Unfortunately, the results have been a bit mixed, and there's already been a series of major shakeups within the studio. As such, it's unclear if all of the many previously announced films will end up being produced, as the DCEU may have already cancelled the Deadshot and Lobo films. In particular, fans have been wondering about the mysterious Green Lantern Corps movie. Luckily, writer and producer of the film David S. Goyer recently confirmed that Green Lantern Corps is still happening.

This news comes to us from David. S Goyer's recent appearance on 2018 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour (via IGN). When asked by fans about the future of Green Lantern Corps, he said that the film is "still in the works", despite the recent shakeup at the studio. But that's about all the information that we've got about the movie, despite fan excitement for the Corps to be properly introduced within the DC Extended Universe.

Fans have been crying out for the inclusion of the Green Lanterns since the DC Extended Universe was still in its infancy. Hal Jordan was an original member of the Justice League in the comics, so many were hoping either he, John Stewart, or any of the other beloved Green Lanterns might show up in the first few films. Unfortunately, this didn't pan out, despite some rumors and plenty of actors campaigning to play various Lanterns.

And Justice League did give GL fans a little taste of the Corps' existence in the shared universe. While there weren't any showings of the Lanterns in the modern timeline, a few unnamed members of the Corps were shown in the flashback sequence, during the ancient battle against Steppenwolf. A few Lanterns were pictures battling Steppenwolf's forces. In particular, one perished in the battle, and his ring was shown zooming off to find its next user.

As to when more Green Lantern Corps information will arrive, it's anyone's guess. David S. Goyer seems to be in the dark as much as the fans, especially in the wake of the DCEU's behind the scenes shakeups, saying:

I don't know. Who knows, especially with what's currently going on with the DC universe? There's obviously a whole recalibration happening with that right now.

Well, that's not too promising. It looks like DC Studios will first focus on working out its leadership before moving forward with projects like Green Lantern Corps. And with only one film being released in 2018, they should have the time to focus and clean house.

The next installment in the DCEU is James Wan's Aquaman, which will hit theaters December 21, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies this year.
