Watch The Gruesome Video Of Tom Cruise Breaking His Ankle On Mission: Impossible Fallout

The recently titled Mission: Impossible - Fallout has had a bumpy road to the big screen. Last year, the stunts that the series is known for took their toll when action star Tom Cruise broke his ankle while filming. This resulted in a temporary shutdown in production to give the actor time to heal. But Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, and this movie has a release date to meet, so things started back up and everything now appears to be back on track. As such, we are getting to see more from the film, including a picture of the stunt that went awry. But if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video of the injury has to be worth even more. Check out the gruesome video below and remember, no one's ever made the first jump.

Yeesh, that looks absurdly painful. Ankles are not supposed to bend in that way. Over the years, Tom Cruise has become known for his fearlessness and willingness to go above and beyond to deliver in a movie. But beyond just being an adrenaline junkie committed to doing his own stunts, this proves just how ridiculously tough he is. And more than just being tough, with his mangled foot dangling off, he had the presence of mind and commitment to his craft (and desire to not have to do this stunt again) to complete the shot. That's wild. The fact that even with a broken ankle Tom Cruise was able to complete the shot in such a manner that it was still usable in the final film is just next level stuff. Like the host says on BBC's The Graham Norton Show, this is why Tom Cruise gets paid the big bucks.

Now I know there is an argument to be made that Tom Cruise has nothing left to prove and he should let a true stuntman take over at this point, but if I'm being honest, I can't blame him. That stunt looks awesome, minus the whole part where his foot moves in a way it wasn't intended to and his ankle is destroyed. But jumping from building to building with enough safety equipment and supervision to know that you're probably not going to die, that's a hard opportunity to pass up. That said, it is worth mentioning that Tom Cruise said that even after all these months, his ankle still hasn't fully healed.

Also of note in this video is Tom Cruise saying that he was chasing Henry Cavill's character in this scene. Cavill is an exciting addition to the franchise, and this might indicate that he will be playing a villain in the film, and a naturally mustachioed villain at that. Rogue Nation was an awesome addition to the long-running franchise and with such an ominous title, I'm excited to see what new action-packed spycraft the Impossible Missions Force has in store this time. Pending any further delays from calamitous injuries, Mission: Impossible - Fallout is scheduled to hit theaters on July 27. For all the latest on Ethan Hunt and the frailty of the human body, keep it tuned to CinemaBlend.
