One Way The Ant-Man And The Wasp Trailer Raises Big Questions About Pym Labs

Marvel Studio's new Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer turns out to have so many blink-and-you-miss-them moments that fans are still unearthing Easter eggs and little asides days later. We caught Michael Pena's snapshot appearance, and we wrote about the images of Ghost, the sequel's primary villain. Later, the use of specific music was unearthed. And now, we see a gigantic Duracell battery in the corner of a screen grab, and it makes us wonder... is the battery large, or is Hank Pym's laboratory small?

Ant-Man Duracell battery

We have been able to piece together a few key plot details about Peyton Reed's Ant-Man and The Wasp, thanks to this first trailer. We know it takes place after Captain America: Civil War, because Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) discusses how he went to help Cap (Chris Evans), and he's under house arrest, with a restricting ankle bracelet. We also know that his actions brought unwanted attention to Pym tech, as Hope van Dyne complains, "Thanks to you, we had to run. We're still running."

And we see Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) shrink his laboratory, turning the San Francisco building into a mobile, transportable operation.

Small Pym Labs

Because of these details, I'm willing to believe that Hank and Hope's lab is miniature, and that the Duracell battery spotted in the top screen grab is a normal-sized battery that can power Hank's entire operation (it's also worth noting that some of the metalwork spotted inside the lab looks like it came out of an Erector Set). Later shots in the trailer suggest that the movie is going to play around with the sudden shrinking and enlarging of items, from the van that Scott and Hope ride in:

To that Hello Kitty Pez dispenser that knocks a dude off of a motorcycle.

And why not, right? The chief gimmick behind Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinemamtic Universe is the hero's ability to manipulate size -- both his, and the size of things around him. The sight gag of an enlarged Thomas the Tank Engine in the first Ant-Man movie was a hoot. I'm glad that director Peyton Reed and his crew are leaning into what stands them apart as they work on Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Ant-Man and the Wasp will open in theaters on July 6, following in the massive footsteps of Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War. Stay up to date on all of the MCU events with our Upcoming Marvel Movies guide.
