Should Lando Get The Millennium Falcon Back In Star Wars: Episode IX? Here’s What Donald Glover Thinks

Lando Calrissian Donald Glover Solo A Star Wars Story Sabaac

The Millennium Falcon is one of the most iconic spaceships in all of pop culture, but Han Solo is not the only pilot to ever get his hands on it. Not by a long shot. Before Han, the ship actually belonged to Lando Calrissian, and audiences will get a chance to see that era of the Falcon's existence this weekend when Solo: A Star Wars Story debuts. On that note, I recently asked current Lando actor Donald Glover if the smooth smuggler should get the Falcon back in Star Wars: Episode IX. In response to the question, Glover acknowledged that it could make for a sweet, dramatic moment, but that Lando may have moved on at that stage in his life. The actor explained:

I think that might be sweet. I know now that Han's gone, it might be kind of nice and sentimental in a good way to see that coming back. I feel like Lando might give it to somebody else. You know? To be like, 'It's not mine anymore.' He has a city he probably has to run.

The events of The Empire Strikes Back made it perfectly clear that Han Solo won the Millennium Falcon from Lando in a card game years before Han and Chewie joined the Rebellion. Now, following Han's death in The Force Awakens, ownership of the Falcon has become a bit of a gray area, as Chewie is still around, and Rey (Daisy Ridley) has become increasingly adept at flying it. With that in mind, Donald Glover thinks that Lando has moved on in the decades since he lost it, and that he should really focus on Cloud City.

Of course, the odds of us seeing what eventually happens to the Millennium Falcon (regardless of whether or not Lando gets it back) seem pretty good. The aging freighter is pretty much the only ship that the Resistance has at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it's clear that the iconic vessel continues to play a valuable role in the battle against The First Order. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see where it finally ends up when the current trilogy concludes next year.

Han Solo and Lando Calrissian will share the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon this weekend when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres in theaters on May 25. Take a look at CinemaBlend's full review of the movie to see what we think of it, and looking ahead to next year, start gearing up for the final installment in the current trilogy when J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX premieres on December 20, 2019!
