A Hurricane Heist Sequel? Director Rob Cohen Has An Awesome Idea

Hurricane Heist Maggie Grace

It is no secret that we live in an era defined by sequels. With franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars reigning supreme, the release of any major action movie begs the question: can it get a follow-up installment? That's a question that I posed to The Hurricane Heist director Rob Cohen in a discussion of the film's home release, and he explained that he would want to see the potential franchise move to a volcano to heat the action up. In response to my question, Cohen explained:

Well, I think we could go to Hawaii to be with the volcano. Volcano Heist would be a very interesting movie to make.

It only makes sense to go from one outrageous natural disaster to another, doesn't it? Rob Cohen has no idea if a Hurricane Heist sequel will ever materialize, but he definitely wants to move the production to a tropical environment in the middle of a volcanic eruption if something of that nature ever receives a green light. After all, the key to a proper sequel is the do something slightly different than the movie that preceded it, while also embracing the charm of the original. Keeping a heist format, but taking the violence, action and Die Hard-esque adventure to Hawaii would do that perfectly. Bring on Volcano Heist, Mr. Cohen!

The use of a volcano in a potential Hurricane Heist sequel also seems notably exciting because of the potential for set pieces. In Hurricane Heist, the heroes and villains actually use the crazy weather as an offensive and defensive weapon, and that continuation of that idea could yield some wild action sequences when lava and magma are thrown into the equation.

If Hurricane Heist does go on to receive a sequel, then it will mark one of several franchises that Rob Cohen has created over the course of his career as a filmmaker. Though he has since moved on from both of them, he was the man behind the original Fast and Furious movie, as well as the original xXx almost two decades ago. Cohen has made it clear that he would want to return to the Fast and Furious franchise to round out the final installment as its director (it's all about family, remember?), but if Hurricane Heist can get the franchise treatment, then perhaps he will find a new home for himself in a new film series.

Hurricane Heist is now available on DVD and Blu-ray! Make sure to pick up your copy of the absolutely insane heist flick and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for any relevant updates about all of the major films that are set to hit theaters over the course of this year!
