Jada Pinkett Smith Made A Strange And Gruesome Request On The Set Of Scream 2

The Scream franchise played a big role in bringing the slasher subgenre of the horror world back to prominence back in the 1990s, and the sequels only upped the ante in terms of graphic violence and intensity. One of the most brutal deaths in Scream 2 is the untimely demise of Jada Pinkett Smith's Maureen, and it turns out that the idea behind the grisly murder stemmed from the actress herself. In a recent interview to discuss the death, the Girls Trip star explained:

I remember saying to the director at the time, 'I want to die the most horrific death that has ever happened in a horror film. I want it to be long and excruciating,' And he's like, 'Cool.'

The late Wes Craven did not disappoint when the time came to deliver on that promise of a gruesome death. The scene in question takes place in a movie theater in which Maureen watches a recreation of Scream 1's now iconic opening scene on the silver screen. Eventually she realizes that the masked man sitting next to her is actually the Ghostface Killer, and he butchers her in front of the screen while everyone else in the theater looks on under the assumption that they're just playing along with the film. One might assume that this all stemmed from Craven's own imagination, but per Pinkett Smith's remarks to EW, she actually asked to go out like that.

Of course, it should come as no surprise to learn that Wes Craven was fine with delivering some gruesome violence in his Scream sequel. Though early slasher movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween didn't feature much blood in the creation of their death scenes, Craven developed a notable affinity for letting the blood and gore run wild in his own horror romps. This trend dated as far back as films like Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, and it became a calling card by the time films like Scream and Scream 2 rolled around. There's a long debate to be had over which one of Wes Craven's death scenes was the most gruesome, but it's hard to deny that Jada Pinkett Smith got one of the best.
