Fans probably want pomp and circumstance. They'd probably prefer that Chris Evans' final day on the set of Avengers 4 included the Star-Spangled Avenger delivering a knockout blow to Thanos (Josh Brolin), or reuniting with his beloved Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). But Evans says his final day on set wasn't all that, explaining:
It was something really stupid, it was something really dumb. Which I also probably can't give away. Well, you know, it was reshoots, so you're doing these little picks and pops, and it's just little things that they need. It might have been a line to Paul Rudd. He wasn't there, but it was a stupid line. The line wasn't memorable to me [laughs]. The day was more memorable than the line.
While attending ACE Comic Con in Chicago over the weekend, Chris Evan opened up to attendees (via ComicBook) about his final day shooting footage or what will eventually become Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers 4. (Any day Marvel wants to give us a title on that one, we'd be cool.)
Naturally, Chris Evans' final day wouldn't include the action of his final scene. These movies are shot out of order, and the bulk of Avengers 4 (we believe) was filmed at the same time as Avengers: Infinity War. This allowed actors to record the bulk of their scenes at once, but as Evans notes, reshoots and pick-ups are necessary.
What's still shocking to me is that we haven't seen a single frame of footage from Avengers 4. Not a teaser. Certainly not a full trailer. It's a summer blockbuster that's roughly seven months away, and yet, the entire production remains shrouded in mystery.
Even when a key cast member like Chris Evans reveals a little bit of information regarding the thing he filmed on his final day, everyone who is part of the Marvel hype machine knows that nothing can be revealed, because every word is analyzed and overanalyzed by sites (like ours).
Will this be the end of Chris Evans' run as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America? We thought so, but after Tweeting a farewell of sorts to the character -- and the MCU -- Evans soft-shoed backwards to say that he doesn't know if his time with the shield is done. Avengers 4 appears to be the end of the road for a number of our key Founding Avengers. Will Hulk, Cap, Iron Man and Thor move on into whatever comes after Avengers 4? (We know Black Widow's getting a solo movie, but even that might be a prequel.)
If it's the end, we can only thank Chris Evans for his service. We can't imagine any other actor in the iconic role of Captain America, and we can't wait to see what the Russos have in store for him, and for the whole team. Avengers 4 will in theaters on May 3... or earlier, if it follows the playbook established by Avengers: Infinity War.
