Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm and the rights to the Star Wars franchise, the galaxy has been growing at an impressive rate. There's the main trilogy of films, standalone movies, Rian Johnson's developing trilogy, as well as the live-action shows coming to Disney+. As such, it seems like just about any character from the galaxy far, far away could pop back up in a future appearance. But could that include Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu?
Mace Windu was a Jedi Master who played a supporting role in George Lucas' prequel trilogy. Played by the great Samuel L. Jackson, fans have been hoping that Windu's strong moral compass and signature purple lightsaber might pop back up in a future installment. And Jackson seems ready to reprise his role, recently, confirming this with:
I’m that guy. All they got to do is call.
Well, that seems pretty cut and dry. While there are no plans for Mace Windu to pop back up in the myriad projects being developed by Lucasfim, Samuel L. Jackson is only a phone call away from donning the robe and saber again.
Samuel L. Jackson's comments to Joe.ie will no doubt excite the generations of Star Wars fans out there who are hoping that Mace Windu could get new life on the silver screen. While he wasn't one of the main characters of the prequel trilogy, he helped to show the tenacity and moral code of the Jedi order. Furthermore, he very merely ended the Empire before it began.
In the third act of Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine's terrifying plan finally became clear. As he was given new power, Mace Windu led a small group of Jedi Knights to his residence in an attempt to capture or kill the hidden Sith Lord. And he very nearly succeeded, using his purple lightsaber to deflect Palpatine's electric blasts, and causing the villain's mutilated appearance. But Anakin disarmed him (literally), allowing The Empire to finish him off presumably forever.
While Mace Windu's fate seems secure, the Star Wars franchise has shown its new affinity to standalone movies set in earlier stages of the timeline. So if Rian Johnson or another filmmaker wanted to re-explore the prequel timeline, then perhaps there's a way for Mace Windu to pop back up. Rogue One brought back Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, and a young Leia, so it seems like just about anything is possible.
Samuel L. Jackson has shown his willingness to return to roles over the past few years, currently starring as the title character in M. Night Shyamalan's crossover film Glass. Additionally, he's played Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a whopping eleven movies, including the unreleased flicks Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
