We still have a ways to go until Kingsman 3 arrives and wraps up Harry and Eggsy’s story, but in the meantime, the Kingsman franchise will keep fans entertained with a prequel movie. While the title for this project had originally been reported as Kingsman: The Great Game, a new title for the prequel has taken its place, and it’s one that we probably should have seen coming from a mile away: The King’s Man.

Here’s the title card for The King’s Man for those interested:

Considering that The King’s Man will explore the origins of the Kingsman organization during World War I, it makes sense that Kingsman itself wouldn’t be in the title. That group of operatives doesn’t exist yet, but it’s easy enough to title the movie after a male figure who loyally serves the British royalty.

Additionally, Disney and 20th Century Fox also released the following longline for The King’s Man:

As a collection of history's worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them.

As if dealing with The Great War isn’t bad enough, The King’s Man’s main protagonist and his allies will have to contend with this assortment of nefarious individuals attempting mass slaughter. How this early 20th century adventure specifically unfolds remains to be seen, but it’ll ultimately lead to the Kingsman organization being created to help keep the United Kingdom and the rest of the world safe.

In Kingsman: The Secret Service, Harry Hart informed Eggsy that Kingsman was originally a group of tailors that have clothed the world’s most powerful individuals since 1849, hence the reason why its agents look so dapper. However, many of those individuals lost their heirs during World War I, so they used that money that would now be un-inherited to create an independent, international intelligence agency that wouldn’t have to deal with the politics and bureaucracy that plagues government-run spy agencies. And thus, Kingsman was born!

We’ll have to keep waiting for more specific details, but The King’s Man has put together a solid cast that includes Harris Dickinson, Daniel Brühl, Rhys Ifans, Gemma Arterton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Charles Dance, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Djimon Honsou and Stanley Tucci. Matthew Vaughn, who is back in the director’s chair, has warned that The King’s Man will be “very very different” from the previous Kingsman movies.

It’ll be interesting to see if The King’s Man gets a sequel should it be critically and commercially successful enough, but even if it doesn’t, the Kingsman franchise isn’t going anywhere in the coming years. Along with Kingsman 3, there’s also a spinoff centered on the U.S.-based Statesman in the works, as well as an eight-episode TV series.

The King’s Man opens in theaters on February 14, 2020 (a date that previous belonged to Bond 25), so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on how it’s coming along. In the meantime, you can look through our 2019 release schedule to learn what movies are coming out later this year.
