Zendaya Is Legitimately Scared Tom Holland's Spider-Man Suit Will Choke Him

Zendaya and Spider-Man in Far From Home

Whenever an actor is cast to play a superhero in a movie or a TV show, you can usually count on the costume they have to wear being uncomfortable. However, Tom Holland, who brings Spider-Man to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, arguably has one of the most uncomfortable suits in the entire superhero movie genre, so much so that Zendaya, who plays MJ in the Spider-Man movies, is worried about what will happen to Holland while wearing it.

Zendaya was recently interview about Spider-Man: Far From Home with Jacob Batalon, who plays Ned, and they were asked if they had “any envy” about the fun stuff Tom Holland gets to do as Spider-Man. Zendaya noted that she’s heard stories about Holland wearing the Spider-Man suit, and then said the following:

You know what I think about all the time that really scares me? Is like, when he wears that thing, the mask that you can’t just take off, cause it’s all like one piece, I get scared all the time like, what if he’s working so hard that he throws up, and then he can't, he chokes! I think about it all the time! That’s really scary.

Now there’s an image that’s hard to get out of your head. Unlike a lot of superheroes, who at least wear masks that leave their mouths exposed, Spider-Man opts to cover his entire face. That does a much better job of keeping his identity a secret, but that also means getting sick poses a bigger problem. Hey, I wouldn’t blame Spidey for getting a little queasy while battling the winged Vulture or the illusion-casting Mysterio.

Given that there are scenes where Peter Parker pulls the mask off his face while still in costume, Zendaya is referring to the Spider-Man suits where the mask is sewn in, making the get-up a true onesie. From that perspective, I can understand why she’d be concerned for Tom Holland’s well being, although it’s one thing to get simply get sick and another thing for that to escalate into him choking on his own vomit.

Regardless, it’s something that Zendaya is still worried about and thinks about “all the time,” as she said to MTV News:

I do! Cause I look at him like ‘Please, I hope he never gets sick, oh my god!’ It's so scary.

I’ll assume that there’s a procedure in place to get Tom Holland out of the Spider-Man suit quickly on the off chance he starts choking or has any other trouble breathing. Playing Spider-Man requires a solid amount of athleticism, and Tom Holland has certainly shown he’s up to the task, even easily pulling off backflips. Fingers crossed the day doesn’t come where Zendaya’s fears become real and Holland is so overworked that it results in that kind of messy predicament.

Spider-Man: Far From Home marks Tom Holland’s fifth outing as Peter Parker, and during its first 10 days in theaters, it’s performed amazingly both critically and commercially. A third MCU-set Spider-Man movie is in the works that will tell a Peter Parker story that’s never been done on film before (perhaps involving Kraven the Hunter?), but maybe there will be more opportunities to Holland to keep playing the role after that.
