The Kitchen Trailer: Watch Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy And Tiffany Haddish Become Mob Bosses

From Captain Marvel to Spider-Man: Far From Home, 2019 has seen tons of comic book adaptations. Not all films with this distinction need super-powered protagonists to be badass as is the case with the upcoming The Kitchen. The crime-drama based on the comic book series created for Vertigo Comics by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle about three mob wives turned bosses played by the incomparable Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss. Check out The Kitchen’s latest trailer:

Looks like an already hot summer has more heat to pack on the big screen! The new trailer from Warner Bros gives us an introduction to the women at the center of this story: Melissa McCarthy’s Kathy, Tiffany Haddish’s Ruby and Elisabeth Moss’s Claire. Since their mob boss husbands have been sent to prison by the FBI, they’re left at the mercy of their gangster friends to take care of them but it’s not enough. The ladies decide to take matters in their own hands.

The 1978-set crime film is set in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen, also made famous by Netflix’s cancelled Daredevil series. They go into their husbands line of work by learning to work guns, pulling heists and turning the heads of the men in the business. It looks like a hell of a ride for the female mob bosses as they learn the trade and get deep into all the drama and danger that soon follows.

Following Melissa McCarthy’s recent turn to drama in Can You Forgive Me?, it’s exciting to see her blend a bit of the two in The Kitchen. Tiffany Haddish is also a well-known stand-up comedian and recent movie star, who has made waves for her roles in Girls Trip, Night School and The Last OG. Ruby has a completely different feel in comparison to her other acting gigs and a welcome one. Seeing the actress standing her ground in ‘70s attire shows some new range to explore from her.

On the other hand, Elisabeth Moss is well-known for her dramatic work in feminist projects such as Mad Men and Handmaid’s Tale and will reportedly continue this in Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man reboot, which she’s described as a “female empowerment” story. The Kitchen is also written and directed by Andrea Berloff, who earned an Oscar nomination for working on the screenplay for Straight Outta Compton. This will be her directorial debut.

Star WarsDomhnall Gleeson, Only The Brave’s James Badge Dales, Spotlight’s Brian d’Arcy James and Common also round out the impressive cast of The Kitchen. The movie hits theaters on a particularly packed summer weekend. Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Guillermo del Toro’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and dog-centered dramedy The Art of Racing in the Rain will face off on August 9.
