The Russo Brothers Dropped An F-Bomb When Asked To Direct Avengers Movies

Thor dual-wielding his hammers in Avengers: Endgame

The Russo Brothers dropped an F-Bomb when they were asked to direct two Avengers movies for Marvel Studios. Recalling the time when they were first approached by Kevin Feige to take on the gargantuan task of making what were once dubbed Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Avengers: Infinity War Part II, the directing duo said:

Kevin, and co-president of Marvel Studios, Louis D'Esposito, asked us to swing by their offices while we were in post on Civil War. The conversation, in short, was, 'Guess what. We want to make the two biggest films ever made and we want to shoot them back to back. And we want you guys to direct them.' Our response -- 'Fuck yeah.'

You might not hear a lot of F-bombs being dropped in Marvel Studios movies (TBD on Deadpool 3) but this one was certainly warranted and was the result not of anger or frustration, but of pure excitement for the Russo Brothers. As they revealed during their Reddit AMA, Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito approached them and asked them to direct two Avengers films, which they called the two biggest movies ever made, and they wanted the duo to shoot them back-to-back.

This unprecedented cinematic undertaking might elicit expletives for different reasons from someone else. It was a massive responsibility that would obviously be hugely difficult, so a rejection of ‘Fuck no!’ or a worried ‘Aww fuck’ would have also been totally understandable. But the Russo Brothers couldn’t help but curse with excitement because they were completely stoked for the opportunity.

This must have been quite a surreal experience for the Russo Brothers. As they said during the AMA, this was while the two were still in post-production on Captain America: Civil War, their second MCU film after Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Prior to that they were best known for the comedic television work on shows like Community and Arrested Development.

So with 1.5 blockbusters under their belt, they were essentially given the keys to the kingdom and tasked with making two pivotal and important films that would conclude a decade’s worth of storytelling in the world’s biggest franchise in a production that would dwarf even Civil War. That’s a wild ask and Kevin Feige has said that the Russo Brothers were entrusted with this responsibility because of how well they were handling all the different characters and the story on that third Captain America film.

It says a lot about the enthusiasm and confidence of the Russo Brothers that their response to this request was ‘Fuck yeah.’ They were clearly thrilled to do something that had never been done before and have more toys to play with. Fortunately, the two proved up to the challenge and we all know how well Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame turned out. However, the Russo Brothers have admitted that in hindsight, they wish they hadn’t shot the two films back to back.

Avengers: Endgame is now available on digital and arrives on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on August 13. Check out our guide to see when all the Phase 4 MCU films are coming and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for the latest movie news.
