Yes, Thanos’ Endgame Sword Is Stronger Than Vibranium

Thanos with the sword on the battlefield

Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters this past April, and managed to meet every loft expectation for the hugely successful blockbuster. The Russo Brothers built a complicated narrative, build on the 21 movies that came before it. The story was massive, so there's still plenty of lingering questions from the rabid fandom. And one of them is about the double sided sword that Thanos used in the final battle, and whether its vibranium, or something stronger.

Long-standing fan questions are being answered courtesy of Endgame's home release. As of today, the movie is available on DVD and Blu-ray, in addition to the digital release that occurred weeks ago. In the movie's commentary, co-writer Stephen McFeely addressed the Mad Titan's signature weapon, saying:

You can also see that while Vibranium is the strongest substance on Earth, whatever Thanos' straight razor there is made out of is stronger.

Thanos just doesn't quit. Josh Brolin's big purple villain has a huge army behind him and can wield the Infinity Stones. And it turns out that he's also got access to a material that's even stronger than Wakanda's endlessly valuable vibranium.

Stephen McFeely's comments on the Avengers: Endgame commentary should clarify a question that has continued to float above the exciting action of the blockbuster's third act. Before the dusted characters were teleported to the battlefield in the epic portal sequence, Captain America engaged with Thanos in single combat.

After taking up Mjolnir and laying some pain on Thanos, the big purple villain was able to turn things around on the First Avenger. Cap lost the hammer, and attempted to use his signature vibranium shield to fend of Thanos' attacks. But that double edged sword cracked away at the shield, until it was broken in half.

This turn of events made the hardcore Marvel fans wonder about what the Mad Titan's giant blade was made of. Was it also vibranium, and therefore able to break Cap's shield. We saw how Black Panther's claws damaged the weapon in Captain America: Civil War, so it was a fair assumption.

Alas, Thanos' Avengers: Endgame was made out of something else entirely. It makes sense too, given that Vibranium is a mineral that occurs naturally on Earth. Thanos hadn't physically been to the planet prior to Endgame, so his armor and weapons must have been forged from another material.

Just what the sword was crafted from remains a mystery, but Thanos clearly has a ton of resources at his disposal. He also knows about Eitri's forge on Nidavellir, so that might be the birthplace of his blade.

Avengers: Endgame is available on DVD and Blu-ray now. The next installment in the MCU will be Black Widow on May 1st, 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
