Little Women Trailer: Watch Emma Watson And Meryl Streep Lead A Killer Cast

Emma Watson as Meg March

Superhero movies might be everywhere, but there's been a long history of projects going from the page to the screen. Before it was comic book, this came in the form of novels. And few books have been adapted for the screen quite as often as Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel Little Women. The March girls are heading back to theaters this holiday season, as Greta Gerwig's Little Women is arriving, with a stellar cast.

Greta Gerwig made her solo directorial debut with Lady Bird, which was a favorite during Awards Season. She's once again re-teamed with star

Saoirse Ronan, who will be playing protagonist Jo March in Little Women. The rest of the cast is killer too, including Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, and Laura Dern. The first trailer for the movie just arrived, check it out below.

The trailer opens on Saoirse Ronan's Jo March, who is seen running in two different outfits, and two different settings. One is a busy city, with Jo wearing more formal clothes. The other features the protagonist running near her family home, in more comfortable attire. This is a story (and trailer) largely focused on Jo's perspective and narration, although her family will be given plenty of time to shine as well.

Jo introduces her sisters, each of which played by strong female actress. Harry Potter alum Emma Watson is playing Meg March, the oldest of the sisters who is typically the most proper, despite often complaining, of the family. Watson replaced Emma Stone after she dropped out. Florence Pugh plays Amy, who is the youngest daughter and artist of the family. Finally, Sharp Objects standout Eliza Scanlen is playing Beth March, whose story takes a decidedly dark turn.

We see each of the sisters' passions throughout the trailer, and how being a woman in 1860's New England adds road blocks to their respective paths. Jo wants to be a writer, and is frustrated with how women are pushed to the side and deemed powerless-- especially if they don't marry. Meg has aspirations for the stage, while Amy is determined to be the best artist she can be.

The March women will have some guidance from their elders, and Greta Gerwig got some insane talent to tell those stories. Laura Dern is playing Marmee March, the matriarch of the family who is attempting to raise for (wait for it...) little women. The great Meryl Streep is playing Aunt March, who doesn't seem amused by the antics and personality of Jo.

Despite Jo's feelings about marriage and a woman's role in 1860's society, there is a clear love story involved in Little Women. The trailer shows her falling or Timothee Chalamet's Laurie, while also rebuffing his offers of marriage. Chalamet worked with Saoirse Ronan and Greta Gerwig in Lady Bird, so clearly the trio has good working chemistry.

Little Women is set to arrive in theaters on December 25th 2019, and looks like it might be an Awards contender. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
