Chris Evans Compares MCU's Captain America To 'Vile' Knives Out Character

Chris Evans Ransom Drysdale Knives Out

Captain America would not approve of the language Chris Evans uses to play his "vile" new character in Knives Out. Evans went from the ensemble filming of the MCU's Avengers: Endgame to the ensemble filming of Rian Johnson's upcoming "whodunnit" movie Knives Out.

Chris Evans found a lot of similarities between making both movies, but one huge difference is in the characters. Evans has shown a lot of range over his filmography, but it may be a shock to the system for fans to see him go from Steve Rogers' wholesome Endgame dance with Peggy Carter to Knives Out's Ransom Drysdale repeatedly telling his own family members to "eat shit."

Here's how Chris Evans described the "pretty seamless" transition from making Marvel movies to making Knives Out:

It is kind of a group mentality, so you’re still kind of collaborating with a lot of people, and it is kind of, strangely enough, a similar family dynamic. A different character -- in the Marvel movies I play a guy who’s a little more taciturn, a little more selfless, and in this movie I play a guy that’s a little more vile. But the way you come to set every day is still pretty similar. And to be honest, it was just as fun. Everyone on this set, everyone’s just here to have a good time and everyone loves what they do. It’s a real blessing.

Yes, as Chris Evans told THR, his Knives Out character Ransom Drysdale is pretty "vile." We got a hint of that in the first trailer, showing Ransom fighting with his dysfunctional extended family in the wake of their patriarch's murder. As he says at one point...

Up your ass. Matter of fact, eat shit. How's that? Eat shit. [points] Eat shit. [points] Eat shit. [points to Toni Collette's character] Definitely eat shit.

Yeah, Cap could NOT do that all day.

As Chris Evans added to Variety, after they wittily noted that he was going from America's Ass to America's Asshole...

It’s nice to play somebody a little more vile. I don’t always get the opportunity to play someone who’s so despicable; so yeah it’s fun.

I'm not surprised to hear it was just as much fun for Chris Evans to make Knives Out as an Avengers movie, though. Sure, he got to work with the Avengers 6 and lovable newcomers in Avengers: Endgame, before retiring his jersey with Robert Downey Jr. But Knives Out has Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer, among others. Not a bad new Avengers team. Plus, he probably didn't need any CGI hair for this film.

Rian Johnson made a similar transition, going from a huge movie like Star Wars: The Last Jedi to something much smaller in Knives Out. In his own comparison, he appreciated getting to focus on the dialogue in this movie.

I'm excited for Knives Out. I love a good highbrow mystery, like Gosford Park or any Agatha Christie adaptation. I'm game for Kenneth Branagh to start an Agatha Christie Cinematic Universe and I say that with no shame. I appreciate that Knives Out is an original mystery, written and directed by Rian Johnson -- who is no stranger to taking big risks, as every The Last Jedi viewer knows.

Knives Out introduces its dysfunctional family, including Chris Evans' vile character (and murderer? we'll see) just in time for Thanksgiving on November 27.

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
