Fat Thor Isn't Confirmed For Love And Thunder Yet, According To Taika Waititi

Thor dual wielding hammers in his battle with Thanos

Avengers: Endgame was full of surprises, but probably the funniest was the cleverly hidden reveal of Fat Thor. Chris Hemsworth’s Norse God, known for shirtless scenes that display his impressive physique, had spent the time after finally killing Thanos holed up, eating and drinking his feelings. Surprisingly, Thor stayed this way the entire film, massive gut and all. Therefore, fans are wondering if Thor will still be fat in his Phase 4 film, Thor: Love and Thunder.

We will have to keep wondering though, because Fat Thor isn’t confirmed for Thor: Love and Thunder yet, according to director Taika Waititi, who said:

This is an ongoing debate that we're still having at Marvel. Cause we're trying to figure out how long — how many months or years — this is after Endgame, at what point does this take place? I think we always want to keep changing it up with Thor. He's so interesting when he's changing all the time.

So the official word on Thor’s physique in 2021’s Thor: Love and Thunder is TBD. Fat Thor cannot be confirmed because the decision hasn’t been made yet as to whether the Avenger will be fat or not in his fourth solo film. It seems that the reason Thor’s weight can’t be decided yet has to do with where Love and Thunder will take place in relation to Avengers: Endgame.

Although Taika Waititi now says that he has written a draft of Thor: Love and Thunder, Marvel Studios has not decided exactly when this Phase 4 film will take place. It sounds like there’s actually a debate going on at Marvel about that point, trying to determine the timeline of the film. Although Taika Waititi doesn’t reveal if he is pushing for something specific.

The ‘when’ of Love and Thunder seems to be the determining factor in what version of Thor shows up, if it’s the Fat Thor (or Bro Thor, if you prefer) from Avengers: Endgame, or the ultra fit Thor from Thor: Ragnarok. Marvel and Taika Waititi seem to be aiming for some realism in this regard. Based on Taika Waititi’s comments, I think we can assume that if Love and Thunder takes place months after Endgame, Thor might still be fat, whereas if it takes place years after, he might be back to his old self.

The more 'in story' time between Endgame and Love and Thunder, the greater the freedom Taika Waititi will have to change up Thor’s look. Although I figure it could be set a month after Endgame and have a fit Thor just by explaining it away with a line about Asgardian physiology. That’s actually what I thought would happen in Endgame, but nope, Thor showed up to fight Thanos looking like he just brushed Cheetos crumbs off his belly.

As far as Chris Hemsworth is concerned, he’s either wearing a heavy fat suit that makes him feel like he’s pregnant, or he’s on a strict diet. That said, Taika Waititi did say to Yahoo! Entertainment that they like to always change it up with Thor, so we could potentially see another new version of Thor. Setting the movie further away from Endgame would theoretically allow more freedom to do that.

Speaking of other Thors, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster is making her return to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, and she will be picking up the hammer this time around. Maybe having her come back into his life will inspire Thor to get back into shape. I’d like to think Jane Foster isn’t into the whole dad bod thing.

You can find out what Thor weighs in at when Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on November 5, 2021. That’s a long time from now, so check out what movies you can look forward to the rest of this year in our 2019 Release Schedule.
