Keanu Reeves Is Literally A Tumbleweed In New Spongebob Movie Trailer

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run Patrick and SpongeBob behold a glowing cityscape

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Squarepants. Who knows to land cameos in his movies? Again, SpongeBob Squarepants. Netting big Hollywood talent to appear in a movie like The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run certainly isn’t a surprise; but even I was pleasantly shocked to see Keanu Reeves literally playing a tumbleweed in the film’s first trailer.

But don’t worry, if nautical nonsense be something you wish, then… take a look at what the SpongeBob saga has to offer, below:

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run isn’t just about Reeves’ character Sage, who happens to also be made of sage and offers sage advice. Rather, the movie’s story is a road trip with the square panted sponge and his friends, as they embark on an important journey: finding SpongeBob’s missing pet snail, Gary.

It’s an epic quest that’ll take our friends outside of the comfort and safety of Bikini Bottom, and into locations like the Lost City of Atlantic City, and what looks like a desert ghost town. That last location is where we find Keanu Reeves, shining in all of his splendid glory, ready to prove Patrick wrong about the etymology of his name. Oh, and he’ll probably be dishing out sage advice too, because he’s a sage and he’s Keanu Reeves. That’s kind of his thing in pop culture.

Returning for their third theatrical outing in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which is the first since 2015's The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, are SpongeBob and Patrick’s legendary voices, Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke respectively. For as long as the show and films have been running, their talents have been at the heart of the story. In that respect, this latest film isn’t only something that could potentially entertain child audiences, it’s also something that could trigger nostalgia for the parents.

And if that doesn’t reel the folks in, then Sage Keanu will definitely do the trick. Seriously, look at that man, and tell us he doesn’t make you think everything’s going to be ok?

The Spongbob Movie: Sponge on the Run Keanu Reeves, glowing in a tumbleweed wisdom

I certainly feel better. Don't you? Strangely enough, it looks like The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run had a bit of a title change in the recent months, as this project was originally going by the name The SpongeBob Movie: It’s A Wonderful Sponge. Whether or not that title will help it win the box office from Fast and Furious 9, the only other competition in its May release slot so far, is yet to be seen. Though that just depends on what name the next film featuring Dominic Toretto and his family happens to take on, we suppose.

Throwing away all of the shop talk of names and box office hopes, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run actually looks like a fun, and gorgeous CGI spectacle; and that’s coming from someone who hasn’t always been on board with the legendary Nickelodeon cartoon. Of course, that could just be the Keanu talking, but we'll see soon enough, won't we?

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run busts into theaters on May 22, 2020. And if you want to see what its competition looks like, head on over to our 2020 release schedule, so you can fill out your movie calendar accordingly. Until then, blessings be upon you from Sage Keanu.
