New Scream Trilogy Is Starting To Take Shape

Scream 4 is one of those movies that most thought would get pushed back until it was eventually forgotten. No one was really going to make another one of THOSE, right? But as years pass and increasingly bad movie ideas continue to get greenlit, it's apparent that Hollywood is running out of shame. Thus, not only will Scream 4 happen but two additional sequels as well. And according the series' writer, they're all starting to take shape.

Kevin Williamson, writer of the first two films in the franchise as well as this new one, recently spoke to MTV about the progress he's made with Scream 4. "It's going good," he said. "I've gotta finish that baby." Not only is Williamson working on a fourth film for the series, but he's also simultaneously writing a script for the fifth film in the planned trilogy. "It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more." Those new characters will likely be the focus of the remaining two films in the trilogy.

What made the original Scream so entertaining was its self-aware style and young cast. Neve Campbell isn't young anymore, but that will obviously be remedied with the new ensemble of characters, but how will Williamson deal with making the tired self-referential style new again? "I guess I'll just have to be very aware of the fact that we're a '4' and that we're beating a dead dog. I'm going to make that very apparent in the dialogue," he said. Sounds like he's pretty confident, but all I can imagine is a lot of "not this guy again!" jokes.
