The Big Avengers Questions Kevin Feige Says The Upcoming Marvel Movies Will Address

The last time that we saw the Avengers compound, it was being pounded into the dirt by Thanos and his armies. Avengers: Endgame concludes with a massive battle in the ruins of the headquarters, and the team somewhat scattering to the winds following its joint victory over the Mad Titan. Spider-Man: Far From Home found “Nick Fury” recruiting Spider-Man (Tom Holland) for a mission, but we haven’t heard any indication of a current Avengers team, or what that title might mean moving forward.

CinemaBlend got time with Kevin Feige for the upcoming standalone film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. And we got around to questioning him about the status of the Avengers team, from its current make up to whether it exists at all. And Feige told us:

That is a great question. And I think you will see that question addressed, and people struggling with that very question, within the MCU right now. I think post-Endgame and with Tony being off the board and Steve Rogers being off the board -- Sam Wilson is a new Cap, of course. But what does it mean to be an Avenger? And is there a core team? And who's leading it, and who's financing it? That is very much an undercurrent that will, while not at the forefront of many of the current movies, is certainly a question that is lingering in the background.

There are members of the Avengers team who still are part of the Universe, including Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who’ll next appear in the Disney+ series of the same name. Other characters like Captain Marvel and the Guardians fought alongside Avengers, and often served as members of the team in the comics.

There have been multiple characters introduced in recent projects like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision that could imply the formation of a Young Avengers team. Given the characters that are interacting with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), there also could be an iteration of a Dark Avengers team.

The Shang-Chi cast

But it’s exciting to learn that there will be conversations regarding the existence of The Avengers, and what that team could look like in the face of a massive threat. Eternals is going to approach a globe-threatening force when that opens on November 5. Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) has been on the Avengers roster before, and has the potential to do it again in Phase Four. So long as the idea of that team isn’t off the table entirely, that has us excited.

We’re also excited for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the next MCU feature that will be arriving in theaters on September 3. Get your tickets now.
