Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially kicked off thanks to Black Widow’s release in theaters, and the various shows on Disney+. There are some A+ filmmakers bringing new movies to the big screen, including Candyman’s Nia DaCosta who is helming Captain Marvel’s sequel. And DaCosta recently teased how The Marvels will be a ‘different beast’ then Carol Danvers’ origin story.
Not much is currently known about The Marvels, but fans are eager to see the Captain Marvel franchise expanding with Brie Larson’s first sequel. But as the title says, she won’t be the only hero in the upcoming blockbusters. Director Nia DaCosta recently spoke to the inherent differences between the two Marvel flicks, saying:
I can say it’s a very different beast. But I am obsessed with how we all deal with our pain and trauma, and there’s some of that in the story.
Well, I’m intrigued. It looks like The Marvels will definitely be a story that touches upon the trauma of its leading characters. It should be interesting to see how this fleshed out the movie’s ensemble, and if it reveals more about Captain Marvel’s mysterious past.
Nia DaCosta’s comments come from her recent conversation with Variety about her upcoming film projects. While Candyman will hit theaters in just a few days, fans are definitely looking forward to her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Marvels. And the cast and crew have already been praising her vision for the mysterious project.

Obviously Nia DaCosta was careful not to actually reveal anything concrete about the contents of The Marvels. Still, her comments about trauma might hint at how the trio of heroes ultimately come together throughout the course of the movie. Brie Larsons’ Captain Marvel will be joined by the likes of WandaVision favorite Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) as well as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, who will be making her debut in a Disney+ series.
Of course, The Marvels won’t be the first time that the MCU has addressed trauma. Indeed, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise also dives into this emotional territory, with each member of the motley crew carrying their own form of trauma. But the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel will feature three generations of women, all with a different racial background, which should add a unique perspective.
The cast of The Marvels have been getting into killer shape ahead of filming, with both Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris posting video proof on social media. It’ll be especially fun to see Parris and Nia DaCosta collaborating so soon after their work on Candyman. What’s more, Samuel L. Jackson recently revealed he had a role to play in the sequel as well.
