Vampires in J. Crew and werewolves in ripped blue jeans ruled the holiday box office this Thanksgiving. Audiences sated their teen-lust thirst for New Moon to the tune of $42 million over the three-day weekend, bringing the five-day holiday weekend total to $66 million.
The sales were enough to put the Twilight saga in first place for a second weekend in a row, though the movie took a massive hit from last weekend's record breaking debut. Not that anyone at Summit cares about a sales decline. At $230 million in domestic sales and nearly $500 million in international sales to date, the movie has already enjoyed more success than most movies dream, especially when you consider the film's budget was a mere $50 million.
The warmth of the holidays also apparently spurred the hearts of feel-good fans. The Blind Side, the latest based-on-a-true-triumph flick, actually increased its sales from last weekend, an extremely rare feat for a movie not expanding its distribution. The movie jumped 20% to $40 million for the three-day weekend, sending the movie just over the $100 million mark in total sales.
New entry Old Dogs saw a mediocre holiday welcome, banking $24 million over the five-day holiday weekend for a fourth place finish. Apparently Robin Williams and John Travolta come pretty cheap these days, as the movie only ran a $35 million tab. The other debut, Ninja Assassin, earned sixth place at $21 million in its first five days. Also running a minimal budget of $40 million, the movie is on track to near breaking even.
Fantastic Mr. Fox expanded in to wide release but no one seemed to notice. With very little for which to give thanks, it creeped up to eighth place with barely $10 million total sales since its opening, leaving the film hurting to make-up for its $40 million budget. Maybe if the animation reflected what modern stop-motion artists can actually do instead of what they could do forty years ago when they were making cheap Christmas specials people might bother showing up to buy a ticket. Where's a new Wallace and Gromit feature when you want one?
Disney launched its first hand-drawn animated feature film in five years into two theaters this weekend. The Princess and the Frog had a chance to stretch its legs, raking in over one million dollars over the five-day holiday. If that's any indication, the film is poised to absolutely dominate the scene when it opens wide in two weeks.
