Jeremy Renner, a recent Best Actor nominee for his combustible performance in The Hurt Locker, has been cast to work alongside Tom Cruise in the upcoming Mission: Impossible 4. Renner beat out other candidates such as Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and even Hurt Locker co-star Anthony Mackie, according to Deadline.

Paramount's thought process behind this decision is that, should the storyline for Cruise's Ethan Hunt start to wane, this new operative could potentially take over the franchise. In light of this, the production company wanted someone who could seize the spotlight and carry an action film on his own.

Paramount Production chief Adam Goodman reportedly said that Renner had a certain "Daniel Craig" quality that appealed to him. I think what he was trying to say was that "this guy looks like James Bond, and Bond knows how to carry a franchise." Fortunately for Adam Goodman and his uncanny ability to spot talent, Renner can legitimately act. In addition to to giving a performance that was pierced by moments of realistic rage, Renner's Sergeant William James had an electrifying spontaneity to him, one that perfectly mirrored the unpredictable quality of the best pic winner. As funny as he occasionally can be, Tom Cruise performances are about as unpredictable as your grandma's shadow when she's in a rocking chair. Look for Renner to light up the screen with an air of reckless mischief.
