First Look At Darren Aronofsky’s Graphic Novel Noah

Back in February we learned that Darren Aronofsky had set his sights on directing a religious epic around the story of Noah and his famous ark. However, even with his impressive showing with Black Swan, landing some cash for the project was going to be a struggle. Never a man to follow the beaten path, Aronofsky took a unique approach to courting financiers and teamed up with artist Nico Henrichon to create a graphic novel of the story to aid his pitches.

Eventually Paramount hopped on board, and now /film has the first look at what to expect out of the novel as well as the film. These images show off a much more intense version of Noah than we’re used to hearing about, and it certainly isn’t just an Evan Almighty clone. Scope out a few images from the book below and see the rest over at /film.

As you can see, Aronofsky and Henrichon aren’t afraid of stepping away from the traditional ideas of what the story of Noah’s ark entails and take a harder look, it’s even a little 300esque, at what could actually have been going on. The director had this to say about his take on Bible stories in February when describing it to the LA Times:

They’re not PG in any way. They’re all about sleeping with your brother’s sister who gives you a child who you don’t know. That kind of stuff got censored out of our religious upbringing.

After he abandoned his plans to direct the superhero sequel The Wolverine last March, Aronofsky turned his sights to Noah, an enormous project that seemed difficult to make until Paramount offered funding earlier this month. There's no word on when production will start, though, as he's still looking for a star, so the graphic novel series should be enough to hold fans over for now.

Also dug up was a short motion comic promo for the book, which is already available in Europe and will likely be finding its way our way fairly soon. Check it out below.

* A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Aronofsky was still working on The Wolverine. We regret the error.
