It's an established fact that there are some months of the year that studios use to dump their more undesirable projects. In this category, January reigns supreme. In addition to following both the end of the winter blockbusters and award season, people are more likely to stay indoors and avoid the cold during the first month of the year, meaning that films that open in that four week span tend to be ignored. So when it was announced today that Premium Rush, the new film from David Koepp, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon, would be abandoning its January 13, 2012 release date, it was seen as good news. That is, until it was revealed that it's moving to August, the second worst movie month of the year.

Box Office Mojo has received word that Premium Rush will now hit theaters on August 24, 2012. With The Dark Knight Rises coming out on July 20th, this could very well mean that at some point Gordon-Levitt will be competing with himself. The film is about a bike messenger in New York City who is hired to deliver an ordinary envelope from point A to B. What he doesn't know is that the envelope contains evidence against a dirty cop who will stop at nothing to get it back.

In other release date news, Here Comes The Boom, the newest film from Kevin James and director Frank Coraci, has moved from July 27, 2012 to October 12, 2012. Interestingly enough, this is the exact opposite of the move that was made by Zookeeper, the last team-up between James and Coraci, which moved from October 2010 to July 2011. The movie is about a high school teacher that decides to moonlight as a mixed martial arts fighter so that he can save his school's music program. The film also stars Salma Hayek, Joe Rogan, and Henry Winkler.

The news about Premium Rush is strange, as the movie released its first trailer last month, but let's hope that the move has to do more with scheduling than quality.
