People don’t talk enough about how dark Todd Phillips lets his Hangover movies get. Yes, the second Hangover aped the format of the original comedy, but in that template rest a number of truly jaw-dropping jokes that push the envelope about what’s acceptable in a mainstream film. And I give credit to Phillips and his team for venturing down these demented paths.
We’re likely in for more twisted humor in The Hangover Part III, which Phillips has been saying will depart from the traditional one-drunken-evening plotline and focus on Zach Galifianakis’ disturbed character Alan, who – the director tells EW – is “going through a crisis after the death of his father.” That explains those funeral scenes shared by Phillips on Instagram a few weeks back. We have two more images, thanks to that EW article. Peep them below:
A blatant Beatles reference? Are Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Galifianakis and Justin Bartha really the Fab Four of grotesque comedy? Some might feel that way. And if the first two Hangover movies are A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, then it’s possible that Phillips could make the final movie his insanely bizarre Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and just pull out all of the stops. Why not, right? This will be the final film in the series, so anything truly is possible.
The Hangover Part III continues to film as it heads toward its May 24, 2013 release date. Phillips directs from a Craig Mazin screenplay. The four leads will be joined by John Goodman, Heather Graham, Mike Epps, Mike Tyson and a well-armed Ken Jeong. Prepare for the insanity.
