Kevin Smith Announces That Clerks III Is Written

A little more than two months after Kevin Smith announced that he'd begun writing Clerks 3 comes word from the actor/director/podcaster that he's finished penning the first draft of the script for the anticipated followup to his Jersey-set films, which will now be known as the Clerks trilogy.

Smith shared the following photo via Facebook and Instagram this week:

Clerks III

IT IS ACCOMPLISHED! CLERKS III, FIRST DRAFT!At 137 pages, it plays like THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK of what's now become the Clerks Trilogy. And I am SO in love with it. Pictured is the script with the clapboard we used on the original CLERKS. Both the old clapboard and the old filmmaker are ready to go back to Jersey for the last time…

It's great to hear him sounding especially positive about it. And he offers a throwback to the original film by including the clapboard used for Clerks, the indie comedy that put Smith on the map and paved the way for such films as Mallrats and Chasing Amy.

The original Clerks debuted in 1994, nearly twenty years ago, and introduced us to Dante and his friend Randal, two discontent store clerks with a lot to talk about. Outside, two knucklehead stoners, Jay and Silent Bob, loiter and occasionally shoplift. The brilliance of the film is in the dialogue among the characters, and that's something we've come to expect and appreciate in Smith's work. His characters are never short on conversation or a bit of geeky debate. When will we see Clerks III in theaters? A few months back, Smith expressed the hoped that we'd see it released in 2014. Whether or not that's still happening remains to be seen, but here's hoping.

If you're a fan of Smith, you may be able to see him live in a city near you in the near future. Tour dates for his Smodcast.com shows can be found at SeeSmod.com. It looks like he'll be at the Moore theater in Seattle, Washington tomorrow (May 15), and he has other cities lined up throughout spring and summer.
