Welcome, students. The topic of today’s Toronto International Film Festival “lesson” is history. Slavery, presidential assassinations and the vicious living conditions in P.O.W. camps are dissected in 12 Years a Slave, Parkland and The Railway Man, respectively. I was lucky enough to see all three here at TIFF, and I’m catching you up on them below.

One of them, I’m interested in seeing again, and soon. One of them, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to watch again, no matter how good it is. The third one was … good, but too modest to make much of a splash in this busy festival setting.
