Katniss And Gale Disagree In First Hunger Games: Catching Fire Clip

The clip comes in during the later part of Liam Hemsworth's interview with Jay Leno:

In just a matter of weeks, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire arrives in theaters at long last. The first clip has made its way online, giving us a look at a tense conversation between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and her friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth), which addresses Katniss’s role in the changing setting that is Panem. People are looking to Katniss for leadership, but Katniss doesn’t see how she can help them. It looks like all she wants to do is leave, but Gale’s not going anywhere.

The clip is an indication of the bigger story that develops in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy. The story begins with the 74th Annual Hunger Games, an event held in the fictional nation of Panem, where the poor districts outside the Capitol select two kids by lottery each year to represent them in a fight-to-the-death arena battle. The Hunger Games focuses on Katniss Everdeen, a teen who takes her sister’s place in the games and — spoiler alert — manages to survive, along with her District 12 partner Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Her candidness during the pre-Game events and later, her efforts to keep herself and Peeta alive in the arena, not to mention befriending Rue, a young District 11 competitor also fighting in the games, earn Katniss the support and respect of the onlooking districts, and toward the end of The Hunger Games, we begin to see the start of what could be a pretty major uprising in Panem.

This new clip (via EW) addresses the pressure Katniss is under after the Games. Rather than simply enjoying a victory lap around the districts and a life of relative luxury as a Hunger Games champion, people are looking to her for guidance. It’s a responsibility Katniss appears reluctant to take on as her highest priority has always been her family’s safety.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will pick up in the aftermath of the games, and ahead of the Quarter Quell, an event that happens every 25 years. For the 75th Hunger Games, past victors from each of the districts are brought back into the arena for an All Star massacre. It’s barely a spoiler to say that the Hunger Games sequel will see Katniss back in the arena and fighting for her life once again, while the Capitol attempts to squash any murmurings of rebellion from its people.
