The Veronica Mars Movie Will Be Heading To Theaters And VOD Simultaneously

The Veronica Mars movie has been an oddball since it was initially conceived. First, there's the fact that it's a film based on a cancelled-too-soon television series, which come around maybe once every decade or so. And secondly, the feature actually got its budget by turning to fans on Kickstarter and raising the money through crowd-sourcing. It's been such a strange path for the movie that it just had to end with a bizarro new twist on distribution.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Veronica Mars will be coming to limited theaters nationwide and VOD on the same day: March 14th. While this may not seem all that unusual, it just takes a quick peek behind the curtain to notice its strangeness. In order to prevent the rage of exhibitors who would complain that VOD is stealing customers away from them, Warner Bros. is simply renting 270 theaters nationwide, most of which are AMC Theaters. Basically, it looks like the studio is trying to offer you a chance to see the film on the big screen, while also understandably predicting that Veronica Mars will be able to make a lot more money on VOD then in a nationwide release.

Both written and directed by Rob Thomas, the show's creator, Veronica Mars is set 10 years after the show ended (which may set the film some time in the future) and follows the titular heroine and former private eye (Kristen Bell) as she tries to start a new life for herself as a recent graduate of Columbia Law School and a young lawyer living in New York City. These plans get interrupted, however, when news comes across the wire that her ex-boyfriend, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), is suspected of murdering his pop singer girlfriend. Veronica finds herself drawn back to her hometown of Neptune, California to solve the crime, but also must deal with the fact that all of her old classmates are back as well for the 10-year reunion. Enrico Colantono, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino, Chris Lowell and more will be reprising their roles from the show, while new additions to the cast include Jerry O'Connell and Martin Starr.

While Veronica Mars will be in theaters on March 14th, it will actually be having its world premiere on March 8th down in Austin, Texas for the SXSW Film Festival. For those of you who can't attend that special event, however, how do you think you'll be going to see the movie?
