Magic Mike XXL's premiere date has been set. It looks like Warner Bros. is looking to get the anticipated followup into theaters on July 3, 2015, which means fans of Channing Tatum and his moves will be waiting more than a year for Magic Mike 2, the sequel which follows up on Steven Soderbergh's 2012 feature.
Fourth of July weekend seems a bit patriotic for the occasion, but then again...
The July 3 release date puts the film in close proximity to the release of the Terminator reboot, which is due to arrive in theaters July 1, 2015.
We've known for a while that a sequel was coming, and that Channing Tatum is writing it... in a fedora...
And Last month we learned that the sequel would be titled Magic Mike XXL, and that Gregory Jacobs would be helming the pic. As we pointed out when that news broke, Jacobs' served as the assistant director on a number of Soderbergh's films, including the Ocean's trilogy. Though Soderbergh isn't returning to direct the sequel, it did sound like he wanted to be involved in the film -- in a helping capacity at the very least -- when he commented about it a year ago.
Besides the implication that the film will be bigger, the XXL title doesn't give much away in terms of the plot. The first film centered on Channing Tatum's Mike Lane, a male stripper who's saving up to start up his own business. He ends up semi-mentoring Adam (Alex Pettyfer), a new dancer at the club. Cody Horn played Adam's sister and Mike's potential love interest, while the rest of the cast is rounded out by Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash and Olivia Munn.
Spoiler alert if you (still) haven't seen Magic Mike:
The original film left off with Mike's saving being drained as he paid off Adam's drug debt, and Mike also quitting his job at Xquisite. And it's pretty heavily implied that he and Brooke are going to get together. So we might assume that some or all of that would be addressed at the start of the sequel, but details about the plot are still too vague to know for sure exactly what's going to be going on in Mike's life in XXL. It seem safe to assume that there will be dancing involved.
