The Incredibles 2 Will Happen Much Sooner Than We Thought

It was officially announced last summer that Pixar is developing an Incredibles 2 - but what hasn't been tremendously clear is exactly when we will be seeing the finished product. The Good Dinosaur, Finding Dory, Toy Story 4, and Coco fill the studio's slate through November 2017, and at this point the Incredibles sequel is simply expected at some time after that point. Sadly, after all this time we still don't have any firm details about the movie - but what we do now know is that the project has actually managed to leap-frog ahead of Cars 3.

With Tomorrowland scheduled to be released soon on Blu-ray and DVD, Brad Bird is back doing press rounds, and it was while speaking to Collider that the filmmaker dropped details regarding The Incredibles 2 release date. Asked about when we can expect to see the sequel arrive in theaters, Bird explained,

Incredibles was supposed to happen after Cars, and our wheels just happened to click a little earlier so they moved us up. Release dates are a little fluid when you're making films so far in advance.

Given that Cars 3 doesn't yet have a firm release date either, this information only gets us so far. That being said, there's certainly more adult interest in Incredibles 2 than Cars 3, so there are many fans (including myself) who are probably celebrating this update. Right now, Pixar has a claim for the weekend of June 15, 2018, so one must wonder if this means that date will eventually belong to the studio's superhero-filled sequel.

In terms of developing how Incredibles 2 will operate, Brad Bird has revealed that he is about three-quarters of the way through the development of the script. Like the first Incredibles, he is also directing the film - and it will be his first animated feature since 2007's Ratatouille (having spent the last eight years working on Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and the aforementioned Tomorrowland).

When I had the opportunity to interview Brad Bird earlier this year, he told me that fans shouldn't really expect Incredibles 2 to comment much on the booming current state of comic book movies - but we should definitely expect it to keep playing up the aspect that makes it special within the genre: the element of family. As of now, any and all specific plot details are being kept firmly under wraps, though we can probably expect them to start leaking out slowly in the coming weeks, months and years (we've got our fingers firmly crossed for more of Samuel L. Jackson's Frozone). Hopefully it won't be too long before Pixar commits to a date, as we can all then officially start our countdown clocks.
