Would Reese Witherspoon Make Legally Blonde 3? Here's What She Said

We all know and understand the classic Hollywood practice of trying to make a sequel of any film that makes money. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Then the movie becomes a TV show or a Broadway musical. There’s an interesting thing that can happen in the middle of all this. The most unassuming films somehow become small franchises. Such has been the case with Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde movies. So will we ever see a new film in this series? It turns out Witherspoon is up for it if you are.

Variety has a report on Reese Witherspoon’s recent appearance on Fashionably Late with Rachel Zoe when she was asked a fan question about making another film in the series. Witherspoon says with the current political climate and focus on women in politics now would make for a good time to bring back the character of Elle Woods and see what she’s doing. According to Witherspoon, the property hasn’t been dormant as "a lot of writers over the years" have tried different ideas for another movie. She doesn’t go into what happened with those ideas. She suggests seeing her character on the Supreme Court, or running for office. The oval office is specifically mentioned a possibility, which would certainly make for an interesting film

The first Legally Blonde followed Witherspoon’s character as she followed her ex-boyfriend to law school. The sequel saw her working in Washington D.C. to attempt to get a law passed to ban animal testing. Seeing the character run for office would certainly make for a logical follow-up. Running for President may be a bit of a stretch but it’s been over 10 years since Red, White, and Blonde and if she ran for Congress in the intervening years it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch.

The Supreme Court is probably the option that would be a bit out of left field, as Elle would be the youngest member of the court since 1812. Joseph Story was 32. There, you learned something today. Still, it’s a better option than the one Reese Witherspoon was given a few months back, which involved sending her to jail. Maybe it’s from illegal campaign contributions from that run for Congress I just made up.

There was a direct to DVD third movie in the series a few years ago, though we’re guessing it will be ignored in any potential sequel. It certainly should be. The series has also seen a Broadway musical adaptation because of course it has.

Reese Witherspoon admits her desire to make a new film will do little on its own to make it happen. Is there enough popular support for a new Legally Blonde movie? Is now the right time to revive this remarkably popular character. Let us know what you think.
