There was little love for this weekend's newcomers, leaving last weekend's big earners at the top of the list.
There wasn't even 'like', much less 'love' for Love The Coopers which debuted at number three with just $8 million. You might consider that amount of money something of a success given the bashing it received at the hands of critics (a painful 17% at Rotten Tomatoes), but conidering the limited likelihood of international interest and a reported $18 million production budget, Love The Coopers is set to be a holiday bust for CBS films.
The 33 didn't fare much better domestically. The true tale of 33 miners stuck in a collapsed mine for almost 70 days only banked $5 million this weekend, but foreign sales have boosted its ticket take to almost $20 million world-wide, putting it within striking distance of its $25 million budget.
Most of the time movies that head to American theaters without an MPAA rating expect to perform poorly due to content scandal of some sort, but in the case of Bollywood flick Prem Ratan Dhan Payo it didn't matter a bit. Even though the movie is chock full of edgy content by Bollywood standards, what traumatizes censors there would barely register a yawn from the MPAA. After a blow-out debut in India where the movie shattered opening weekend box office sales, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo landed eighth place domestically with $2 million. Considering its limited 280+ location release, its per theater average was $8,300, second only in the top ten to Spectre's $9,000 average.
A fourth newcomer this weekend barely registered a blip on the box office radar. My All American came in around number twelve with just $1.4 million.
i>Spectre slipped 50% from last weekend, but still held on to number one. The latest Bond entry shot past $100 million, adding $35 million to its now $130 million domestic total. The Peanuts Movie remained at number two, banking $24 million.
