Johnny Depp And Tom Hanks Are Circling A South American Crime Thriller, Which Sounds Awesome

Another possibly high profile project is looking to fill its cast with some famous faces. Crime thriller Triple Frontier is circling the man behind everyone’s favorite pirate and an actor known for playing the everyman.

According to a report from Variety, Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks are both looking to join Triple Frontier. The ensemble thriller has been in the works for quite a while, with Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow being involved in the project at one point. J.C. Chandor, the director behind All Is Lost and A Most Violent Year is now set to helm the film.

Triple Frontier will focus on the tri-border area that forms the junction of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, where the Igazu and Parana rivers meet. The area, which is an important tourist region, is also known for being a hotbed of organized crime and terrorist activities. The Paraguayan side is an especially popular area for terrorist operations, since the country has no anti-terrorism laws.

Johnny Depp recently received a Screen Actors Guild award nomination for playing mobster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. Aside from that film, the actor has been on quite a streak of playing heavily made-up and costumed characters, with kooky mannerisms or speech patterns in his films. The most popular of those characters, Captain Jack Sparrow, has seen Depp play the role in five Pirates of the Caribbean movies since 2003, and receive an Oscar nomination for his part in the first movie. Depp recently wrapped filming on the most recent of the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The actor has a few films due out this year, including Yoga Hosers and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Tom Hanks has made a career of playing lovable, principled everymen in odd and intense situations. Hanks has been nominated for five Oscars over his almost 40-year film career, winning back to back awards for Philadelphia in 1994 and Forrest Gump in 1995. The actor is also beloved by children and fans of animation everywhere for his voice work as Woody in the three Toy Story films, a fourth of which is currently in pre-production. Hanks’ recent movies include Captain Phillips, Saving Mr. Banks and Bridge of Spies.

Both Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks would likely make a good fit in an ensemble crime thriller about international terrorism and/or organized crime. They’re both well-known for throwing themselves into their roles and letting their characters take over. Depp, especially, with his love for disappearing physically into his characters, is sure to be an asset to the movie. While Hanks will surely bring a lot of realism to whatever part he may take. Triple Frontier will be lucky to have either of them.
