How Jason Bourne Will Connect To The Previous Bourne Movies

On Super Bowl Sunday we finally learned what the newest entry in the Bourne franchise would be called. While the title Jason Bourne may have be a little wanting in the creativity department, the TV ad spot was not lacking for all the action we expect to see come from the super spy series. But it’s been quite a long time since we’ve seen Jason Borne in action. What kind of state will he be in when we meet him again? Now the actor who plays him is finally beginning to open up a little on the details.

When last we saw Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum, the character had finally remembered everything that was missing in his memory when we first came across him in the first film. While that might seem to be the closest thing to a happily ever after as Jason Bourne would ever get, Matt Damon tells Entertainment Weekly that although he may remember everything, there are still unresolved issues that the character has been dealing with for years. It’s a desire to bring an end to these feelings that will bring Jason Bourne back. The memory is complete, but the character is not.

This is the completion of this journey that started in the Bourne Identity. It’s part of the first three [movies], it’s not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we’re not saying it’s the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically.

As Julia Stiles says in the trailer, "Remembering everything doesn’t mean you know everything." This appears to be the hook that the movie is hanging its plot on, the idea that while the character might remember everything he knew before, there are things that he never knew that are still part of the same mystery. Whether he understood this or not, he’s been haunted by these demons since the end of the last film, and now he’s ready to deal with them. Check out the Super Bowl spot below.

And of course they’re not calling it a conclusion. After the less-than-stellar outing by The Bourne Legacy without Matt Damon, the studio has to be excited that he’s back in the fold. While Damon has been clear that he hasn’t signed to make any Bourne films beyond this one, we’re sure everybody would be ready to pull the trigger on another installment assuming this one does as well as expected. Besides, Jeremy Renner, still wants to do his team up movie, and we have to admit that would be pretty cool to see.

We’re looking forward to the return of Jason Bourne when the movie hits theaters this July.
