Deadpool 2 was reportedly green lit before the first film was finished with preview audiences. Now that Deadpool has become not only a bonafide hit, but the biggest chapter in the X-Men franchise, there’s really no question that a sequel is coming. It’s happening people. The only questions are how fast will it happen, and what will it look like when it gets here.
While the people behind Deadpool 2 have it made it clear that they’re not going to over-do the budget on the sequel just for the sake of spending money, we still expect that some new characters will make appearances, as either friends or foes, regardless of whether or not everybody from the first film returns. So who would we like to see join Deadpool 2? Here are a few ideas.
CableWe’ll start with the obvious one and get him out of the way. Cable will be there. Ryan Reynolds told us as much in the closing credits of the current film. It wasn’t a tease. It wasn’t a hint. It was a statement. As one of Deadpool’s long time frenemies, it makes perfect sense. Now the only question is who will play the role. Stephen Lang has said he wants the job. Deadpool’s creator thinks Jon Hamm would be perfect. We’re honestly not against Keira Knightley. The sky’s the limit here.
JuggernautThe screenwriter of Deadpool has said that his dream battle for the Merc with a Mouth would be against The Incredible Hulk. As there are two armies of lawyers that will prevent that fight from happening anytime soon, where else can we find somebody that can beat the crap out of a guy who can’t die? Juggernaut was criminally underused in his one outing in X-Men 2. The rebooted timeline will also us to recast him and bring him back to beat the holy hell out of Deadpool.
DominoDomino is the result of a secret government program and a former mercenary. She’s something of a badass and doesn’t really give a damn what you think. Sound like anybody you know? Domino could go toe-to-toe with Deadpool and give him a run for his money. Alternately, the two could end up fighting side-by-side and would complement each other quite well. Domino also has a long history with Cable, so his inclusion increases the chance that we’ll see her, at some point anyway.
NightcrawlerWe know that we’re going to see Nightcrawler in this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, but after that, we have no idea what will be happening with the main cast of characters. Until such time as the proper X-Men franchise figures out what they’re doing, how about we let some of them go and play with Deadpool for awhile? Nightcrawler would be one of the best because the character is an eternal optimist. If you thought Deadpool was annoyed having to hang around with Colossus, just image how crazy Nightcrawler would drive him. The comedy would be stellar.
MagikSpeaking of Colossus, he has a sister. Magik is one of the New Mutants, and as they are expected to have their own film in the not too distant future, a little cross promotion (X-promotion?) certainly wouldn’t hurt. Whether or not Colossus himself returns, Deadpool 2 could build on the comedy of the first movie by using the sister of his previous ally. She could be goody two-shoes version 2.0, or they could make her the polar opposite of her brother, which would be much more to Deadpool’s liking.
The Stepford CuckoosNegasonic Teenage Warhead was a character chosen for Deadpool solely because her name was the coolest thing ever. Since bizarre names are apparently all that’s required to join this club, may we introduce The Stepford Cuckoos. The Cuckoos are psychically-linked quintuplets. They’re essentially a hive-mind that work and act as a single entity. And they’re high school girls. They’re like if Heathers took place at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Yeah, Deadpool would have a field day with this, and we’d love to watch him do it.
X-23By the time that Deadpool 2 makes its debut we will have seen the final bow from Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Whatever the plan for the character after that, we expect that some time will pass before we ever see Logan again. If that’s the case, then maybe the Deadpool sequel would be a good place to debut X-23. She’s the female clone of Logan who has taken up the Wolverine mantle in the comics. If she’s good enough for the books, she’s good enough for the movies, and one way or another we want to see Deadpool go up against a set of adamantium claws
