Marvel and DC have the biggest grip when it comes to making cinematic comic book adaptations, but lesser-known properties are also being brought to the big screen. Case in point, next year will see the release of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, based on the French science fiction comic series Valérian and Laureline. It was announced back in 2012 that The Fifth Element and Lucy director Luc Besson would helm the movie adaptation, and now we have our first look at stars Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan geared up for battle in the movie.
Luc Besson posted this image on his Instagram account of Cane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne in character as Valérian and Laureline, respectively. Joining them is Besson himself, who’s wearing a jacket featuring Valérian and Laureline’s comic book counterparts, and Besson only refers to himself as "a guy on the back." Since this is your standard "pose for the camera" promo shot, there’s nothing revealing plot-wise, but in those futuristic suits, the two young actors definitely look ready to get their sci-fi on for the production.
Just like the original comic book, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets follows the eponymous hero and Laureline, two "spatio-temporal agents" who travel through time and space to protect humanity across various worlds in the 28th century. While Valérian is keen on striking up something more than a "professional relationship" with Laureline, his history with women and her "traditional values" causes her to rebuff him. When these are assigned to investigate the expansive city of Alpha, a metropolis composed of seventeen million inhabitants working for the betterment of the future, they’ll learn that not everyone there shares in this utopian vision.
Along with Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan, Valerian also features Clive Owen as Commander Arün Filitt, as well as Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, John Goodman, and Rutger Hauer in undisclosed roles.
In addition to this first look, Besson also provided some details to EW about what to expect from Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Early in the movie, Valérian and Laureline find themselves undercover in the middle of the mission (similar to what the James Bond movies put 007 through) and trying to escape. The movie will also feature other police forces, including a militaristic, black robot named K-Tron. Valérian and Laureline was originally published from 1967 to 2010 across many installments, so there’s certainly enough source material to draw from should a sequel be ordered. Plus since Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne already have comic book movie experience (The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Suicide Squad, respectively), this will only boost their geek cred.
Currently shooting in France, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters on July 21, 2017.
