The Rock Has A Quick Update On His Big Trouble In Little China Remake

Never question The Rock’s status as "franchise Viagra." If you need a movie series brought back to life, you simply inject some Dwayne Johnson into the proceedings and watch the cash roll in. He’s done it for the Fast & Furious franchise, the G.I. Joe franchise, and soon he will apparently do it for the 1980s classic Big Trouble in Little China. We haven’t heard much about the project recently, but it now seems that The Rock has an update for us regarding the upcoming film.

During a recent interview with Fandango to promote his upcoming comedy Central Intelligence, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that the Big Trouble in Little China remake is still very much on the agenda for the near future. He said:

That's happening, man! That's happening, that's happening. And again, that's one of those things where you gotta take really good care of it.

It’s been roughly a year since we last heard any substantial information about the potential Big Trouble in Little China remake. Now it seems that we will definitely get it. Dwayne Johnson seems particularly enthusiastic about the project, but he also seems to understand that people love the original, and as such the creative team behind this remake must take care to ensure that they get it right. This is far from Johnson’s first time getting involved with beloved material, and it most certainly won’t be his last, so we think he understands the importance of treading lightly.

The original Big Trouble in Little China is one of those quintessentially campy 1980s B-movies. It stars Kurt Russell as a tough-as-nails truck driver named Jack Burton who finds himself swept up in an insane crime war within San Francisco’s Chinatown. Eventually Burton must go on a journey with his best friend Wang Chi to rescue Wang’s fiancé from a sorcerer named David Lo Pan. Yeah, if that sounds crazy, it’s because it’s a crazy as hell movie.

It was only a matter of time before Hollywood got around to remaking Big Trouble in Little China. It’s the sort of bizarre cult classic that could totally benefit from a charismatic revival by a guy like Dwayne Johnson. That being said, not everyone involved with the original seems particularly thrilled about the upcoming remake. Although Kurt Russell and director John Carpenter have not voiced outright opposition to the project, they have more or less come across as particularly ambivalent to the whole thing. Of course, once they get paid, we're sure they'll be happy as can be.

So now we know for sure that another Big Trouble in Little China is on the way, but that’s really all that's certain at the moment. We will keep you posted regarding any and all pertinent information as it becomes available to us. Stay tuned for more details!
