Few recently announced movies have garnered the same degree of controversy as Ghost in the Shell. An adaptation of a wildly popular Japanese Manga, the upcoming movie drew immense criticism for casting white actress Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. Although much of the news related to the upcoming movie has seemed overwhelmingly negative, we have just learned of a new casting update that should hopefully less please anyone who has kept tabs on the upcoming film.
According to a brand new report from THR, it seems that the upcoming Ghost in the Shell adaptation has tapped actress Rila Fukushima for a role in the film. Although the nature of her role has not been disclosed at this time, her physicality and versatility in action sequences leads us to believe that her part in the film will be incredibly physical and action-heavy. If you were hoping for some swordplay and epic fight scenes in the upcoming movie, it's looking like you will get your wish.
Most mainstream audiences will recognize Rila Fukushima for her work within the superhero genre. On the silver screen she starred alongside Hugh Jackman in 2013’s The Wolverine as Japanese mutant Yukio. On the small screen she has had a recurring role on The CW’s Arrow as iconic DC character Katana. Both of these roles have required her to be incredibly nimble, and wonderfully adept with numerous forms of weaponry. As Ghost in the Shell represents another foray into the world of action, we think that trend will almost certainly continue.
Just check out this awesome scene from 2013’s The Wolverine and you’ll be able to see for yourself that this woman knows how to hold her own in a fight:
The casting of Rila Fukushima will likely come as good news to many who have complained about the Ghost in the Shell adaptation in recent months. The project has been plagued with complaints by people leveling accusations of whitewashing against what should presumably be an Asian cast. Although Scarlett Johansson will still headline the film, the casting of Japanese native Rila Fukushima represents a step in the right direction. Now it’s just a question of whether or not the decision to cast an Asian actress in this particular role came about as a result of the massive outcry against Ghost in the Shell.
We will keep you posted regarding any and all updates related to the upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie, as well as Rila Fukushima’s involvement in the project. The controversial yet highly anticipated movie will hit theaters on March 31, 2017.
