Golden Globes 2012: Gervais Roasts, Cable TV Dominates

Tonight, the Hollywood Foreign Press celebrated film and television from the past year with the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Cable dominated in the TV categories, securing most of the awards, with ABC’s Modern Family representing network television. It was a good night for premium cable.

Showtime has cause to celebrate, with Homeland winning Best Drama and Best Actress in a Drama for Claire Danes, and Episodes’ Matt LeBlanc taking the award for Best Actor in a Comedy. Game of Thrones fans will likely agree that Peter Dinklage deserved the award he won for Supporting Actor for the HBO fantasy-drama.

Were there any upsets? Those who were hoping that Bryan Cranston would take the award for Best Actor in a Drama were likely disappointed, especially considering the lack of Breaking Bad in the Best TV Series, Drama category, but the greatness that is Kelsey Grammer in Starz’ Boss is undeniable.

?As for the ceremony itself. Host Ricky Gervais made good on his promises to roast Hollywood once again, though it seemed like the audience was a bit more prepared for it, and some actors even took the stage with a comeback on hand.

?Over all though, the show was entertaining and typically glamourous, but lacking in “wow” moments for the most part, with a few censored out swear words to spice things up. The evening could’ve used a bit more Gervais, but the ceremony as a whole gets a pass for that as it managed to wrap up under the three-hour mark.

Here are a couple of video highlights from the night. Ricky Gervais opens the show by slinging a few jokes into the crowd...
