Deadline reports Deadwood creator David Milch has written an HBO pilot called The Money, and it has attracted the esteemed talents of Nathan Lane and Brendan Gleeson to star. While it’d be nice to see these two in some kind of a buddy comedy, David Milch projects tend to run a little darker than that, and this one has much potential to take the drama to low places.
Based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick, the story is set in 1820 and follows the crew of a whaling ship off the coast of Nantucket that winds up being destroyed " by a vengeful sperm whale." Twenty of the men aboard the ship were able to survive the attack and get away on a lifeboat, but after a long time out at sea they were forced to resort to cannibalism.
Stop-motion animation filmmaker Henry Selick has a track record of casting actors for their voices instead of their names. Certainly his casts have included names you recognize, including Dakota Fanning, Richard Dreyfus, Teri Hatcher, Ian McShane, Keith David, David Thewlis, Chris Sarandon and Paul Reubens, they were assigned their parts because they were the right performers needed for their roles.
Ever since 2009's Land of the Lost ended up being a total box office disaster (making only $49 million domestically with a $100 million budget), director Brad Silberling has spent some time in director jail. While he's worked on TV projects, offers weren't exactly flowing in for him to get back into the feature world. Apparently he's back, however, and has added two stellar actors to his newest project.
In the movie, both Kendrick and Howard will play members of the FBI. Kendrick is an old girlfriend of LaBeouf's character who feeds him information, while Howard is the top man on the case. Gleeson will play a cop who investigated Redford's crimes back in the 1960s, while Elliot will be a player in the marijuana trade that employs Julie Christie's character.
Back in 2008, actor Brendan Gleeson teamed up with Oscar-winning writer/director Martin McDonagh for a film called In Bruges. A brilliant dark comedy featuring incredible performances by its two leads, the film has since gained cult status and ended up winning numerous awards. Now Gleeson is back working with a McDonagh, but this time it’s with Martin’s brother John Michael who has crafted the amazingly funny The Guard.
You pretty much only need to add Liam Neeson in there to get an Awesome Irish Actor royal flush, and who knows, Gleeson may talk him into it before too long. Oddly enough, none of these actors appear to be eligible to play the main character
When reading coverage of various film festivals, there's occasionally a title or two that really sticks out. The Guard is one of those films. Having already played at Sundance, Tribeca and Berlin, the movie has already gotten an incredible amount of exposure and has earned rave reviews. Then again, what do you expect from a film starring Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle and Mark Strong?
