Hollywood has played host to a slew of bizarre custody fights involving celebrities, but the one Jason Patric has found himself at the center of may well be the strangest of all-time. The Narc star is trying to win paternity rights for a child born through artificial insemination. Back in 2009, the actor gave his sperm to ex-girlfriend Danielle Schreiber and she agreed to keep his identity a secret and never ask for money. She upheld her end of the bargain, but thanks to a brief reconciliation, Patric now wants to amend the agreement.
According to TMZ, Patric and Schreiber were periodically together for more than a decade before they split, and he offered her the insemination deal in 2009. Two years later, they got back together, and Patric began spending some time with little Gus. They grew extremely close, and following his break-up with Schreiber, he decided to file for partial custody.
Under the eyes of the law, a man providing artificial insemination has no rights to paternity whatsoever. Even though he provided the sperm, he’s not even technically the kid’s legal father, but given his long-term relationship with Schreiber, it’s possible he may have some grounds here.
A judge recently awarded Patric temporary visitation rights, but no long-term decision on the case has been made. Schreiber reportedly wants Patric to spend time with Gus, but given he’s never paid child support, she doesn’t want him to have any real say in the decision making process.
