After Courteney Cox packed up their daughter and left back in 2011, David Arquette did a lot of work to make changes in his life. He spent a month in rehab, stayed sober for more than two years and attempted to remain as close to his ex-wife as possible. Most observers thought he would stay on that same route indefinitely, but with the divorce now official, he’s apparently decided to take a different fork, at least as far as drinking goes.
Yesterday morning, Arquette appeared on The Howard Stern Show and admitted to the affable radio host that he’s once again hitting the bottle and not just a glass of wine here or there. The actor apparently considers himself “a drinker” and like other drinkers, he “drink(s) a lot”. If you ask him, however, he’s apparently thought long and hard about the change and has convinced himself that it’s in his best interest to booze away.
Here’s a portion of his actual quote, as per E! Online…
I'll smoke a little weed. I don't really want to get into all that, because the problem is people are going to take this and start talking about it… I'd been sober for two years and four months and feeling that I wasn't being that true to myself, like what I enjoy and this and that."
I get where Arquette is coming from. He clearly enjoys being the life of the party, and I’m sure he felt like an imposter sitting at home trying to pretend to enjoy crossword puzzles or whatever he was filling his time with. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is getting blackout drunk on a regular basis when you’re forty-one-years-old isn’t the right path either, especially when you have a child. Whether he has his daughter with him on the particular night or not, he should be seeking out healthy activities, whether it be basketball, going to the movies or playing board games. Life is filled with an endless array of work opportunities and leisurely activities, and an overwhelming majority of them don’t cause liver failure or scare the hell out of those who love you. Besides, if drinking is so fundamental to who you are that you need it to be “true” to yourself, that’s a pretty scathing indictment of one’s priorities.
Cox hasn’t spoken on the record about her husband deciding to drink again, but sources close to her are saying she’s really “concerned about him”.
"He is such a wonderful guy, but he finds it difficult to balance these things, as do most people who have had problems in the past. It's not a good idea for him to be drinking again, and everyone is very worried about him. But unless he wants to stop there's really nothing anyone can do."
Ideally, he’ll either stop drinking or find a way to have a few glasses without ever stepping over the line, but practically, it’s unclear what might happen moving forward. Regardless, Pop Blend sends out its sincerest well-wishes to the entire family. David is a good dude. He’s always come across like nothing but a fun-loving straight shooter, and everyone here wishes him nothing but the best.
