Nobody can resist the catchy tunes in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Not even Prince Harry. The recently-married member of British royalty was recently in attendance of a charity gala performance of the beloved, award-winning hip-hop musical alongside his wife, Meghan Markle. And when the show proceeded, he thanked everyone in attendance for benefitting the good cause at the center of the evening. That cause is raising funds for Sentebale, the HIV charity that Harry co-founded alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. Then, in the spur of the moment, Harry decided to try his hand at singing himself, and much to his chagrin, he quickly realized why the musical life wasn't one that he ultimately explored. Granted, Prince Harry seemed to be very modest about his singing capabilities. He opted only to belt out "You say..." from King George's song "You'll Be Back" in a low volume, before stopping himself abruptly and telling the audience "that's definitely not going to happen." Nevertheless, it was an amusing little moment. And it was a nicely humble moment too from the high-standing member of the British monarchy. Nothing makes you vulnerable quite like singing. It just goes to show you that nobody can truly resist the beloved musical numbers found in Lin-Manuel Miranda's acclaimed musical.
If you are somehow unfamiliar with the song sung by Prince Harry, here is a rendition of "You'll Be Back" performed by Jonathan Groff during his Tony-nominated Broadway run as the tyrannical ruler. In the musical, it is performed by the pompous and egotistical King George III, who is one of Prince Harry's ancestors. Considering he is one of the main antagonists of the protagonist Alexander Hamilton, we're not one hundred percent certain what Prince Harry is saying here, but we're probably looking into it too much. After all, Prince Harry didn't even sing past the first line of the song.
It should also be noted that Lin-Manuel Miranda tried to get Prince Harry to sing the song for the Victoria Palace Theater crowd after the West End production, but Harry noted that he turned down the opportunity. Maybe he didn't want to embarrass himself in front of the singing professionals.
This is not going to be the first time that Hamilton is performed for a good cause in the next few months. Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to reprise the beloved character he once wrote when the show begins its tour in Puerto Rico, where the proceeds will go towards raising awareness towards the devastation the island has faced in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Miranda is both excited and nervous, he claims, to return to the iconic role that brought him to stardom.
