Gisele Bundchen Shares Blunt Thoughts On Leonardo DiCaprio Split

Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed

Gisele Bundchen is now married to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, and we'll be seeing a lot of Gisele reaction shots during Super Bowl LIII this Sunday, February 3. But you probably knew Gisele previously dated Leonardo DiCaprio.

The A-list model and A-list actor were together from 2000 to 2005. The relationship was pretty serious. However, in her new book Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life (via Net-a-Porter), Gisele Bundchen revealed how she knew it was time for them to breakup.

Gisele Bundchen said she was deeply in love with Leo at the time, but eventually realized he was no longer right for her:

No longer numbing myself with smoking, drinking and too much work, I was becoming more and more aware of things that I’d chosen not to look at. Was I alone in wanting to do some serious soul-searching while he stayed the same? In the end, unfortunately, the answer was yes.

Leonardo DiCaprio may not appreciate the suggestion that he stayed the same -- not to mention being lumped into the smoking, drinking, too much work section -- and the perspective that he did no soul searching. The Leo of 2019 is now a prominent environmentalist -- and so is Gisele. He launched the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, following the success of Titanic, so he was clearly already on that path before they dated.

It's possible the real differences he had with Gisele were on the family front. Leo is known for his partying with his bros (his "Wolf Pack") and dating models in their 20s. Like Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused -- he gets older, but they stay the same age.

While they were together, Gisele Bundchen was deemed the biggest star in the fashion industry. Leonardo DiCaprio was pretty fresh off Titanic, which came out in 1998, and he stayed busy with The Beach (2000), Catch Me If You Can (2002), Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), and The Departed and Blood Diamond, which both came out in 2006. As People noted, Gisele was even his date to the 2005 Oscars, when he was nominated for The Aviator, and that's the only time he's brought a girlfriend as his date to the big show.

Work was apparently paramount for both of them. But after they broke up, while Leo continued to date other models, Gisele started dating Tom Brady and stayed with him. They started dating in December 2006, which is also when Brady split with his then-pregnant girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady are now married and have two children of their own, born in 2009 and 2012. She was the highest-earning model for years, with her 2016 income at $30.5 million (per Forbes). But she's also a Goodwill ambassador and, now 38, focuses a lot of her time on her husband and kids and talking about healthy eating/living.

Leonardo DiCaprio, now 44, finally won a Best Actor Oscar for The Revenant. He founded his own production company and is an active environmentalist. He'll soon reunite with director Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Leonardo DiCaprio's personal life is always a source of speculation, but after dating Gisele Bundchen he dated another model Bar Refaeli. In spring 2018, according to E!, he started dating 21-year-old model, Camila Morrone. So maybe Gisele was kind of right -- he does pretty much stay the same.

Gina Carbone

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
