Thursday night, Philadelphia's National Constitution Center hosted a special presentation. The evening’s purpose was to present the Liberty Medal Award to former defense secretary Robert Gates. The night began smoothly, but veered into incoherent psycho-babbling when one - probably drunk – Army wife took the stand.

Actress Kim Delaney, who portrays a wife on the Lifetime program Army Wives, began her speech with talk of “(Serving) in active military duty family for five years.” A reasonable beginning, if it was true. Soon after, the speech devolved into Delaney explaining how she was talking about working on the Lifetime program. She never did get around to discussing the night’s honoree and his contributions. According to People, after a bit more rambling, the audience was discomfited enough that Delaney was escorted off the stage.

While Delaney made an asshat out of herself, it strikes me as odd she was given the honor in the first place. Did the event planners really need a subpar TV celebrity, especially Kim Delaney, who has been in the press for drinking issues in the past, to speak at Gates’ event? Part of event planning is setting yourself up to be prepared for any anomalies. Hiring a wild card to speak seems like asking for disaster. You can check out whether you think Delaney was drunk, or just a trainwreck, below.
