I almost can't believe the awesomeness of what I am reporting on right now. I thought it was a joke at first, but it's actually for real: you will soon get to devour some delicious Schweddy Balls, courtesy of Ben & Jerry's. It is things like this, quite frankly, that make my life worth living.

The popular ice cream company has announced that they are releasing a flavor inspired by the 1998 Saturday Night Live sketch starring Alec Baldwin, Ana Gasteyer, and Molly Shannon. The skit, a parody of National Public Radio shows, is one of the most well-known and memorable clips from the show's thirty-seven year history. Baldwin, who is hosting SNL for a record sixteenth time on the September 24th season premiere said, "For a long time, I thought that ‘Here Lies Pete Schweddy’ would end up on my tombstone. Now, thanks to Ben & Jerry's, the goodness of the Schweddy family recipe won't go with me to the great beyond.”

Gasteyer added her statement on the tasty treat as well, saying "The Schweddy Balls sketch was a personal favorite from my SNL run, so I am pleased as holiday punch that Ben and Jerry's has taken it upon themselves to share the Schweddy Family recipe with the world. As a person and a performer, I am a sucker for holiday balls. And I have no doubt this ice cream will cause many to scream 'Good Times.'"

Do me a favor: take a second and imagine this: Someone who's never heard of the sketch crawls out from the rock they've been hibernating under for a nice trip to the grocery store. Maybe they're in the mood for some Cherry Garcia, or maybe it's Chunky Monkey they desire. They walk down the aisle, open the freezer door, and see a whole shelf of Schweddy Balls staring them in the face. This skit is thirteen years old and is still making me laugh. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Of the fun new flavor, Ben & Jerry's CEO Jostein Solheim says: "No other show has made such an impact on our culture, poking fun at our accomplishments, our failures, and our history: the good, the bad and the ugly. Since 1975, 'Saturday Night Live' has allowed us to laugh at ourselves and for that we say thanks." I am honestly surprised that no one seems to have a problem with the semi-risque title. Ben & Jerry's spokesman Sean Greenwood took time out to address that, saying: "The name is irreverent, but we've always been about having some irreverence and some fun. We're not trying to offend people. Our fans get the humor." The flavor will be released in a limited batch, so pick some up while you can: it will only be in your grocer's freezer for three or four months, with a possibility for more if it proves to be popular among customers.

So what will the taste of Schweddy Balls bring to your mouth exactly? The flavor is made up of "vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum and is loaded with fudge covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls." Sounds good to me! I have to say it: I can't wait to get my hands on some creamy and delicious Schweddy Balls. Whew. That felt good.
